n previous interviews, Peter Rawlinson, the CEO and CTO of Lucid Motors stated that crash testing would only be tested on production models. In the investor call yesterday, Peter Rawlinson said, “We are in the late stages of the crash testing program, and the car is in the midst of EPA range testing.”

In addition, Lucid Motors have already confirmed that they are past the pre-production/quality validation prototype cars.

On CNBC about a month ago Peter Rawlinson said this:

We achieved a landmark last Friday when we started building our quality validation production run of cars. We completed our pre-production run very successfully. The quality validation builds are the cars that we eventually will sell directly to customers once we got the quality right. This is a big step in our mission to industrialize.

So with this information we have, it seems to be that Lucid Motors is just waiting on a few things.

  • The completion of the merger: It wouldn’t make sense for Lucid Motors to announce any big news before the merger has already happened. Business-wise, it makes sense to tell any prominent information after the merger is completed and Lucid Motors is trading under LCID.
  • Crash testing program: From the investor call on July 13th, 2021, we know that Lucid Motors is currently crash testing production models, which means that they can/have produced cars that are ready to be delivered but have to pass specific governmental tests and be approved.
  • EPA testing: Again, from the investor call held earlier this week, we know that Lucid Motors is currently testing the range of the car. Once again, these tests are a must for Lucid Motors to start delivering its car. If the Lucid Air Achieves an Estimated EPA Range of 517 Miles on a Single Charge, it would be the first EV to achieve that. #FirstTo500

Also, as a reminder, Lucid Motors confirmed that it now has over 10,000 reservations for the Air, its first car, and a luxury electric sedan.

It might not sound as impressive as the number of reservations in some other programs, but it’s not bad. In the summer of 2012, before Tesla delivered the Model S, it had about 12,000 reservations for the electric sedan.

So what does this all mean? It means that we could be getting close to customer deliveries. It is very, very possible to start delivering cars to customers in August. Lucid Motors has also just shared details of its new vehicle service program called Lucid Care, along with anticipated further information surrounding the warranty for new vehicles like the Air sedan. We are getting very close, and I think we might be a lot closer to deliveries than we believe.
