Lucid Motors is preparing to launch its first-ever electric sedan, the Lucid Air, in the second half of 2021. Naturally, any new EV company is compared to Tesla, which is considered to be the holy grail in the EV space.
Lucid Motors is trying to capture the luxury segment in the EV space, while Tesla is present in the market's premium segment. More importantly, Lucid Air and Tesla's Model S Plaid are similar in performance. This article will examine how the Lucid Air Dream Edition stacks up against the Tesla Model S Plaid.
The Lucid Air Dream Edition comes in at a steep $169,000 that's all-inclusive, meaning it comes with all the tricked-out options. Including the 21" Aero Dream Forged Wheels, with gloss jet black and diamond-turned faced rims. It also includes the Surreal Spatial Audio Sound system, Dream Drive Level 3, and 3 years of complimentary charging with Electrify America. Talk about a deal!
The Tesla Model S Plaid comes in a little bit lower at 129,990 without any options. With premium paint, wheels, interior, and FSD (Full Self-Driving), you're looking at $148,990, which is 20,010 cheaper.
It should be mentioned that Lucid Air has a few cheaper options, and technically, it does start at 69,900. Likewise, the Tesla Model S Long Range.
Besides price, the one aspect that most consumers are anxious about is range. The Lucid Air beats the Tesla Model S Plaid with an EPA range of over 500 miles—almost 20 percent higher than the Model S.
Lucid Air's battery capacity is 113 kWh (kilowatt-hour) versus 98 kWh for Tesla Model S Plaid. In terms of the time it takes to charge, Tesla Model S Plaid takes almost 15 minutes for 200 miles worth of charge. Lucid Air takes 20 minutes to charge for 300 miles.
When it comes to acceleration, The Model S Plaid is faster. It goes from 0-60 in a whopping 1.99 seconds. The Lucid Air Dream Edition goes from 0-60 in a blazing 2.5 seconds.
The Lucid Air Dream Edition has a staggering 1,080 HP making this one of the fastest EVs on the market with a top speed of 168 MPH. On the other hand, the Tesla Model S Plaid has 1,020 HP with a top speed of 200 MPH. You get more performance on the Tesla, but it comes with a drawback. You get less opulence than the Lucid Air.
Lucid Motors claims there will be level 3 autonomy dubbed DreamDrive when they launch the production cars. Nobody is sure what that means, but our guess is adaptive cruise control, assisted lane changing, etc.
With Tesla, they have FSD, which consists of:
- Navigate on Autopilot
- Auto Lane Change
- Full Self-Driving Computer
- Traffic Light and Stop Sign Control
In conclusion, each car is different in its unique ways. The Lucid Air Dream Edition is elegant but modern, sophisticated, but easy; it is the ultimate luxurious EV. Tesla, on the other hand, is minimal, fun, and youthful. They are very different but yet similar. If you're looking for Ultimate Luxury that can also be fun on Sunday, the Lucid Air Dream Edition is definitely something to look at.
